How to maintain a Car Paint Protection Film (PPF)? A Detailer Guide.

Many car enthusiasts know about Paint Protection Film and its benefits, but there is a lack of awareness about how to properly maintain it. This has led to negative rumors spreading, such as PPF turning yellow or not being able to prevent swirl marks. In reality, people just need to learn how to maintain their cars after installing Paint Protection Film (PPF).

Garware Company, the largest car PPF manufacturer in India, has its very own research and development center in the country. This ensures that their car care products, such as the paint protection film, are specifically designed for India's distinctive weather and climate conditions. What sets Garware apart is that they produce every component of their paint protection film in-house, guaranteeing top-notch quality throughout the entire manufacturing process.

Recently, Garware developed a kit for the maintenance of PPF during installation.

The Garware Maintenance Kit includes:

1. A Sealant-based coating like Ceramic coating.

2. Microfiber cloth

3. Applicator cloth and pad

The Sealant coating is unique compared to regular coating. Its purpose is to enhance the gloss of PPF without affecting its self-healing properties.

Advantages of the Maintenance Kit:

1. PREVENT FROM YELLOWING:

The yellowing of paint protection film occurs when it is exposed to natural light, ultraviolet light, heat, oxygen, chemical leaching, moisture, and other environmental factors. Improper production processes and pollution can also contribute to the yellowing of the film.

PREVENT FROM YELLOWING

The PPF sealant coating will form an unseen layer over the paint protection film, preventing any damage from occurring. It is advisable to perform maintenance every 6 months or at level 1 (in the 3rd month) to tackle the problem of yellowing.

2. PREVENT FROM LOSS OF GLOSS:

Swirl marks often occur when vehicles are cleaned improperly or when rough cleaning cloths are used during dry cleaning or cleaning with water. Hard water marks, on the other hand, are caused by the use of groundwater for vehicle cleaning.

PREVENT FROM LOSS OF GLOSS

Upon applying PPF sealant coating, an imperceptible layer will form on the surface of the Paint Protection Film. Swirl marks and water marks will emerge on the coating itself, rather than on the paint protection film. Consequently, it will be effortless to eliminate any damages or marks resulting from incorrect cleaning methods.

It is recommended to carry out the maintenance every six months.

3. HYDROPHOBIC EFFECT:

Applying PPF sealant coating forms an invisible layer over the paint protection film, improving its water-repellent qualities. As a result, washing the vehicle becomes quicker and the cleaning process becomes easier.

HYDROPHOBIC EFFECT

It is recommended to carry out the maintenance every six months.

How to use the maintenance kit:

1. Check the car for any signs of damage:

It is crucial to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the exterior of the car for any signs of damage. Carefully examine the body of the vehicle for scratches, dents, and paint chips on the front and rear bumpers, doors, fenders, and hood.

2. Clean the surface with a clay bar:

Use a clay bar to remove any contaminants and impurities from the surface of a vehicle, like embedded dirt, grime, and other particles., leaving it smooth and clean.

3. Thoroughly wash a car using car shampoo:

Car shampoo often contains conditioning agents that can help nourish and protect your car's paint by removing pollutants and contaminants that may have accumulated on your car's surface, leaving it looking vibrant and glossy.

4. Use a microfiber cloth to clean the vehicle:

Using a microfiber cloth to clean the vehicle is an effective and efficient way to remove dirt, dust, and grime from the surfaces. Microfiber cloths are made of tiny synthetic fibers that are designed to attract and trap particles, making them ideal for cleaning tasks.

5. Apply a rubbing compound to fix the PPF surface:

To fix the PPF surface, start by applying rubbing compound in a circular motion using a clean microfiber cloth. This will help to remove any imperfections or scratches on the surface of the paint protection film. Make sure to work in small sections at a time and apply gentle pressure to avoid damaging the film.

6. Apply a polish(sealant coating) to the surface.

Now it's time to use the polish specifically designed for PPF. Unlike regular compounds, this coating is applied differently to prevent heat generation during polishing. In case the surface feels hot, the detailer can gently buffer it. After 30 to 40 seconds, wipe off the excess sealant coating with a microfiber cloth. Do not wash the vehicle for 24 hours.

Note -  A PPF has a self-healing micron layer in its upper layer. On top of that, an oxidized and polluted layer forms, causing the PPF to appear dull and yellowish. However, Garware company research states that this is a normal condition for a PPF. The information in this article is provided during the training session held by Garware Company, and attended by The Detailing Gang
